The University of Gdańsk was founded on 20 March 1970. It was formed from an amalgamation of two institutions of higher education: the Higher Economics School in Sopot and the Higher Pedagogical School in Gdańsk. Later, it also included the Higher Teacher Training School. Currently, the University educates over 30,000 students, doctoral students and post-graduate students in 11 different faculties:
In such fields of study as Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Oceanography, Quantum Physics, Pedagogy, Psychology, Law, and Economic Sciences, the University of Gdańsk is one of the best institutions in Poland.
The University has been involved in scientific research cooperation with scientific research centers from nearly all corners of the globe within hundred contracts. The implementation of projects is an important element of joint activities. The University of Gdańsk ranks high in the field of innovation and has received funds to implement projects as part of Horizon 2020, the European Union’s largest development program. The university has extensive experience in the implementation of projects under Framework Programs and Horizon 2020 – a total of 73 projects, and in the period from 2002 to September 2017, about 330 agreements on co-financing of European and international projects were signed.
Part of the university's activity also takes place within the framework of cooperation with business – opinions, research and expertise for entrepreneurs are created here, and the university functions as business incubators for solutions in fields such as biotechnology, biology and chemistry.
In addition, the university has a number of general university units, such as min. Library of the University of Gdańsk, Analysis and Expertise Center of the University of Gdańsk, Development Project Management Office, National Center for Quantum Information Technology, and others.
