A group of researchers from the SIMIP (Endorsed CMIP6 diagnostic Sea Ice Model Intercomparison Project) project analyzed the simulation results for the Arctic Ocean ice gust surface in the future. Regardless of the adopted greenhouse gas emission reduction scenario, the model predicts in 101 out of 128 simulations that the minimum area of sea ice in September will fall below 1 million km2 even before 2050.
