Summary of International Ocean Data Conference 2022

One of the largest conferences is behind us. We had the pleasure to organize: International Ocean Data Conference 2022 - The Data We Need for the Ocean We Want, under the auspices of IODE and UNESCO.

 

The conference lasted from February 14 to February 16 this year. This year's edition was hosted by Institute of Oceanology Polish Akademy of Sciences. This event took place at Sheraton Hotel, and the co-organizer and sponsor was eCUDO.pl project, whose leader is Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences.

The eCUDO project is co-financed by European Funds under the Operational Program Digital Poland, Priority Axis II E-administration, number POPC.02.03.01-00-0062 / 18-00.

 

As part of the conference, we had the pleasure to listen to over 80 presentations by scientists from around the world, view over 40 posters and take part in many interesting discussion panels. Over 1,000 people from all over the world have registered online, and nearly a hundred have come in person.

It is one of the most important and largest conferences of this type, with the patronage of numerous organizations, including the Polish Academy of Sciences, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Zbigniew Rau from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Office Minister Director Mr. Michał Wójcik form the Ministry of Climate and Environment and the president of Sea Research Committee Assoc. Prof. Waldemar Surosz from the Sea Research Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

 

Congratulations and thanks to all the co-organizers: the IODC, especially the guests from UNESCO - Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission!

 

Special thanks are going also the Director of the Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences - Jan Marcin Węsławski for enabling the organization of the conference, as well as to Marcin Wichorowski, who initiated and provided the entire organizational and executive process with an appropriate course of action.

 

However, this conference would not have taken place without IOPAN team that worked on the preparation, and then the conduct of this conference. Here, thanks go to the entire local organizational and technical committee, which included: Mirosława Ostrowska, Paulina Pakszys, Tomasz Jankowski, Joanna Potrykus, Tymon Zieliński, Monika Zabłocka, Joanna Stoń-Egiert, Tomasz Krawczyk, Tomasz Kijewski, Krzysztof Rutkowski, Witold Ptaszek , Marek Zwierz, Dominik Lis, Katarzyna Romancewicz, Aleksandra Koroza, Justyna Meler, Marlena Szeligowska, Emily Chen, Mariola Laskowska and all the others who supported the preparatory process.

The intended and expected outcome of the International Ocean Data Conference 2022 “The Data We Need for the Ocean We Want” is the Sopot Declaration providing a number of actionable recommendations to the global ocean data and information, observational and management community aimed at realizing the implementation of the ocean data and information “global commons”.

Therefore, In the coming days all your contribution will be elaborated, your ideas will be incorporated and the Sopot Declaration will be presented to the community.
